- What are musical toys for babies and toddlers?
Babies in utero can hear noises from the outside world from about 23 weeks on; perhaps that’s why they show such a noticeable response to sound from birth. By the time they’re about a year old, they generally react happily to singing and music, and as time goes on, their love of joyful music only increases.
Every parent knows that happy music can change a cranky baby into a cheerful one, and that toddlers and preschoolers love any opportunity to create sounds. But though they’ll happily bang on a pot with a wooden spoon for hours, parents may want to help them make their own music, with toys that reward interaction with sounds and tunes, or mini musical instruments that they first bang or tap on, and may later use to pick out a tune.

Best musical toy for babies overall
Make wonderful music with your baby and the Lamaze Octotunes. Children squeeze, pull, tug, and hug this toy; each tentacle plays a different note when squeezed, ascending and descending a full octave. Babies respond positively to the octopus’ friendly face, and its floppy body and the fabric handle on the head makes it easy to grab onto. It has a light vanilla scent, too, to add to the sensory joy.
Heads up
Squeezing the tentacles hard enough to make a sound requires some hand strength.

Help your baby make a joyful noise with the Baby Einstein Discovering Music Activity Table, with buttons that make the sounds of a drum, French horn, and guitar, as well as a mini keyboard that can be set to sound out individual notes, or read out numbers or colors in response to tapping, in English, Spanish, or French. If your baby is just sitting up independently, the table’s top comes off for floor play; once she’s pulling up, you can use the table’s legs to encourage standing.
Parents say
"Highly recommend! My DD turns 1 on Wednesday and we gave her an early present. She's obsessed right now. The top of the table comes off too."
Heads up
This table is not steady enough for babies to pull up on; use in table mode only when your baby can stand up on her own.

What are musical toys for babies and toddlers?
Musical toys are wonderful for babies and toddlers to begin their exploration of music. Since babies and toddlers don’t quite yet have the fine motor skills and brain development to play complicated instruments, being allowed to bang on drums, cymbals, bells, wood blocks and other instruments of that nature are great.
Introducing music into a child’s routine can be accomplished in a number of ways. Spending a few minutes each day dedicated to making music with musical toys, singing recognizable songs at bedtime, or listening to your family's favorite tunes at dinner time will help expose your child to the benefits of music, and is fun and bonding for all.
