Here's how to make the BEST Homemade Bread:

Gather up your ingredients above and heat a cup of water to 110 degrees. If you don't have a thermometer, just use warm tap water. (Confession – I have NEVER used a thermometer and my bread has always turned out just fine!). One of the reasons I love this recipe is that it is SO forgiving!

Place all ingredients into the bread machine mixing bowl in this order; warm water , milk, oil, honey, brown sugar, salt, all purpose flour, then yeast. You do NOT need to worry about stirring!

Set your bread machine to the bread dough setting and then let the machine do all the work. This generally takes several hours depending on the machine that you use.

Once the dough is finished, remove and place into a greased loaf pan. You'll then want to let your bread rest until it doubles in size – this rise time will generally take between 30 minutes to an hour.

Near the end of that time, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Once your bread has doubled in size, place it in the oven for a bake time of about 30 minutes until golden brown. Place your loaf of bread on a cooling rack for a bit, and then enjoy! (We love this Copycat Texas Roadhouse Cinnamon Butter with our bread for a treat).

Bread Machine Dough Recipe

Ingredients

Bread Machine Bread Dough Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Water Warmed (110 - 115 degrees)
  • 1 Tbsp Milk
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Honey If you don't have any, you can skip this, and it will still turn out fine!
  • 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 Cups All Purpose Flour You can also substitute with half whole wheat flour
  • 2 tsp Instant Active Dry Yeast

Instructions

How to Make Homemade Bread in a Bread Machine

  • Heat 1 cup of water to 110 degrees. (If you don't have a thermometer, just use slightly hot tap water and it will be just fine. (really!) I never use a thermometer and never have any problems with my bread machine dough rising.)

  • Put all ingredients in the order above into bread machine (you don’t need to stir it , just dump it in!) Water, milk, oil, honey, brown sugar, salt, flour, then finally - yeast.

  • Set bread machine on dough setting, and let it make the dough for you over the next couple hours.

  • Once dough is made (it takes my machine about 1 1/2 hours to make just the dough), remove dough and place in loaf pan.

  • Let bread machine dough rise for about 30 minutes to an hour, until it's around double the size. When I don't have time to let it rise, I just go ahead and bake it a little sooner and it works out fine. This recipe is extremely forgiving! Towards the end of this time, preheat oven to 350.

  • Bake bread dough in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, and enjoy!

Note – if you’re away from home during the day you can let the bread machine do all the work for you, I just don’t like the weird shape that my bread comes out in when I use the machine so choose to make it on the dough setting and then bake it in a loaf pan.)

Now serve it up with homemade Texas Roadhouse Cinnamon Butter, and ENJOY!

If you don’t have a bread machine . . .

First, say a prayer that you’ll find one at a yard sale(I really do love mine ~ here's a reasonably priced on at Walmart that gets good reviews!). You'll also want a good bread loaf pan.

While I prefer using this Bread Machine Dough Recipe, there are others out there that you can use to bake bread without the machine. This has just become our go to recipe and it's so good!

Why Easy Homemade Bread Is WORTH MAKING

You may wonder, why do I take the time to make homemade bread when I can easily grab a loaf at the bakery….

Honestly? I've made this recipe for years now about once a month, and every time I pull down my bread machine out of the pantry my family gets a wee bit excited.

In fact, many years ago as I was driving my then 15 year old home from band practice we had this conversation ….

“Guess what I made?”

“Chicken and dumplings?”

Nope.

“Italian Beef?”

No.

“Some chocolate chip cookies?”

Seriously kid? Nope – not that either. Homemade bread! I really am the best mom, right? 😉

“Mmmmm . . . yup, you really are the best mom.” 😉

Folks, this kid was a sophom*ore at the time so I knew I only had a few more years to convince him my cooking is worth coming home once he scooted off to college.

If chocolate chip cookies, homemade bread and chicken and dumplings do it, you can bet we'll be eating those for years to come . . .

And besides the fact that it is delicious – it's truly easy to make. It has a few steps, granted, but they're not hard steps!

I can't make it more often than once a month because I have very little self control when it comes to a loaf of warm homemade bread in the kitchen, but when I do it's just a happy treat for the whole family.

It's so simple to make and takes about 5 minutes of effort ~ so worth it if your family loves homemade bread too! Give this Bread Machine Dough Recipe a try and let us know how you like it 🙂

FAQs

What is the best flour to use in a bread machine? ›

Just be sure to use a flour with a high protein content. King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, with its high gluten, is an excellent flour for bread machines. Numerous people have told us that their recipes worked in the bread machine using King Arthur, when they didn't work with other all-purpose flours.

What is one drawback of using a bread machine? ›

One disadvantage of using a bread maker as opposed to your hands is that the paddles are typically fixed, meaning they remain in the dough when baking, often leaving a hole in the middle of the loaf. Whilst this is not the biggest hinderance, it can be an annoyance to those who aim for gold standard loaves.

Why is my breadmaker bread so dense and heavy? ›

Too much heat or humidity might lead to a too-quick rise and a crevice near the center of your bread. Conditions that are too cold might delay proofing or rising, resulting in a super-dense loaf. The bread machine works on a timer and hums along at its regular pace.

Which yeast is best for bread machine? ›

Both commercial dry yeast and instant yeast are suitable for bread machines because they are designed to be added directly to the dry ingredients, and they don't require proofing in water before use.

What flour do professional bakers use for bread? ›

While bread flour is more than adequate for everyday breads, some professional bakers use high-gluten flour with a 14% protein content to provide extra strength to dense, chewy doughs like bagels and pizza dough. High-gluten bread flour gives milk bread it's taut structure and compact (but tender) crumb.

What flour do professional bakers use? ›

Pastry flour is the middle ground between cake flour and all-purpose flour. Professional bakers love that it's finely milled with a protein content that hovers around eight to nine percent, striking the perfect balance between flakiness and tenderness while maintaining structure.

Why are breadmakers no longer popular? ›

Some attribute the demise of the bread machine to the fact that cooks were just disappointed by their results. Lara Pizzorno, the author of Bread Machine Baking, chalked it up to food snobs who regarded the machine as “the electric equivalent of The Bridges of Madison County” in a 1996 article in The New York Times.

Is it cheaper to buy bread or make it in a bread machine? ›

Making bread from a machine is marginally cheaper than buying it, as long as you eat bread frequently enough to offset the cost of the appliance. Specifically, I see this as an investment that's smart for households that go through bread quickly, like large families or homes with multiple roommates.

Is it better to use bread flour in a bread machine? ›

So yes, you should use bread flour in the recipe. It has higher protein than all-purpose flour and will help your bread rise better and hold its shape.

Should you remove bread from bread machine immediately? ›

Condensation can build up in a bread machine if it is not opened at the end of the baking program. If a loaf is left in the machine after baking it can absorb the moisture from the condensation and become soggy. For future bakes, remove the loaf at the end of the baking cycle.

How do I make my bread machine bread better? ›

Some recipes will advise adding sugar, which, in addition to making the bread a little sweet, helps the yeast to rise better. Others also suggest adding a little oil, such as olive or vegetable oil. This helps the dough form, preventing it from sticking to the sides of the pan, and makes the bread more tender.

How do you make bread lighter and fluffier? ›

All it takes is a small amount of dough enhancer per loaf to create a much lighter and fluffier result. Using a dough enhancer like Vital Wheat Gluten works to improve the texture and elasticity of the dough and elongate the strands of gluten. Doing so allows more room for the gas in the dough to develop and rise.

Can you use Red Star active dry yeast in a bread machine? ›

Both commercial dry yeast and instant yeast are suitable for bread machines because they are designed to be added directly to the dry ingredients, and they don't require proofing in water before use.

What happens if you use regular yeast in a bread machine? ›

Bread machine yeast and rapid-rise yeast are specially formulated for the bread machine and become active more quickly than active dry yeast. You can use active dry yeast in your bread machine, but it should be dissolved in water before being used.

What yeast do professional bakers use? ›

Fresh yeast, sometimes called cake yeast or compressed yeast, is a block of fresh yeast cells that contains about 70% moisture and is commonly used by baking professionals. It's pale beige in color, soft and crumbly with a texture similar to a soft pencil eraser, and has a stronger yeast smell than dry yeast.

Should I use regular flour or bread flour for bread machine? ›

"Bread machine flour" and "bread flour" are interchangeable terms. So yes, you should use bread flour in the recipe. It has higher protein than all-purpose flour and will help your bread rise better and hold its shape.

What is the healthiest flour for bread machines? ›

Whole-Wheat Flour

Whole-wheat flour is much heartier than all-purpose flour and produces denser baked goods with a more robust flavor. Milled from wheat berries with the nutritious bran and germ still intact, whole-wheat flour is rich in fiber and essential micronutrients like iron, magnesium and vitamin B6.

What happens if I use all-purpose flour in bread machine? ›

Of course you can! But 'all purpose' flour has a little less gluten, so your bread won't rise as high. If you're making bread the old-fashioned way, by hand, you can let it rise a little longer. But a bread machine does it exactly the same every time.

Can I use all-purpose flour in my breadmaker? ›

King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour is perfect for bread machines.
